Mariah Carey’s Complicated Past With Siblings Alison Carey and Morgan Carey

Mariah Carey’s mother and sister Alison both died on the same day last weekend, the singer confirmed in a statement.

“I am heartbroken that I lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” she said in a statement. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend this last week with my mother before she passed.”

Carey concluded by saying she appreciated “everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

No further details have been released about the deaths of Patricia and Alison Carey.

Over the years, Mariah Carey has spoken candidly about her complicated relationships with her sister Alison Carey and her surviving brother Morgan Carey.

Who was Alison Carey, Mariah Carey’s sister?

In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer described the complexities of her relationship with her sister and their childhood on Long Island, New York.

Mariah Carey described Alison Carey as “deeply wounded” and “the most brilliant and broken person I have ever known.”

The singer noted that her sister experienced the “discomfort” and “hostility” in her family firsthand, writing that Alison Carey “saw things that a child should never see and that I will never know.”

“I do know that what she went through damaged and derailed her childhood,” Mariah Carey wrote. “She was fully aware when our family bond was shattered and our parents turned on each other; she absorbed the full pain of a family falling apart.”

In addition to describing their estranged sibling relationship, Mariah Carey also noted that her sister was “extremely intelligent and curious and loved to learn.”

“I was told she got good grades, got into good schools and also loved music,” Mariah Carey added.

The memoir also notes that Alison Carey had two sons, Mike and Shawn. In several chapters and stories, Mariah Carey mentions her nephews, writing in the acknowledgments that she “cherishes them endlessly.”

She also described more harrowing moments with her sister, who she said had a drug addiction.

“My sister gave me Valium, gave me a pinky nail full of cocaine, gave me third-degree burns and tried to sell me to a pimp,” Mariah Carey alleges in the book.

Her sister denied the allegations, and following the memoir’s publication, Alison Carey threatened to sue her sister Mariah Carey for $1.25 million in New York County Supreme Court in February 2021. Alison Carey alleged “the infliction of immense emotional distress caused by the callous, cruel, vindictive, despicable and wholly unnecessary public humiliation of the defendant’s already deeply damaged older sister,” according to Variety.

NBC News located a subpoena in New York containing the details from the Variety article, but no additional information about the status of the lawsuit could be found.

Who is Mariah Carey’s surviving sibling, Morgan Carey?

Following the publication of Mariah Carey’s memoir, her surviving brother Morgan Carey also filed a defamation lawsuit against the singer.

Her memoir details violent fights between Morgan Carey and their parents, including an incident in which he pushed their mother Patricia against a wall so hard that she was knocked unconscious.

“Suddenly there was a loud, sharp sound, like a real gunshot. My brother had pushed my mother with such force that her body slammed into the wall, making a loud cracking sound,” she wrote. The next thing I knew, she was completely limp, as if her bones had melted and fallen to the floor. It was a split second. It was an eternity. My eyes were still where they were, only now I was looking at my mother, who was lying in a crumpled pile on the floor.”

In his defamation lawsuit against his famous sister, Morgan Carey denied that there were ever violent fights in his childhood home. His legal team specifically called the above story a “false and defamatory lie.”

Elsewhere in her memoir, Mariah Carey wrote that her brother delivered “powdered party favors” to “the beautiful people” of New York City when he worked in bars and clubs in the late 1980s.

“He was strikingly handsome and occasionally worked as a model. He was well-known and loved,” she wrote of her brother. “He discreetly provided the beautiful people with their powdered party favors. He was devilishly charismatic.”

In Morgan Carey’s defamation lawsuit, he denies dealing drugs. His lawsuit against his sister also provided some details about him from his own perspective. His legal team wrote that Morgan Carey was “a very thin child born with cerebral palsy, grand mal and petit mal epilepsy, and a left leg that was several inches shorter than the right.”

The lawsuit further states that he “overcame his limitations and became very fit as a young man” and was featured in men’s fitness magazines.

The lawsuit alleges that Morgan Carey and his wife moved to Italy in 2012.

“While there, they wrote two screenplays, one of which was sold into a movie,” the lawsuit states. “He is currently writing a fitness and lifestyle book on permaculture.”

New York Supreme Court documents show that a defamation lawsuit filed by Mariah Carey’s brother is still pending in court.
