Heat, humidity and the threat of a severe storm combine to create potentially dangerous weather in Metro Detroit

4Warning Weather – It’s hot!

Temperatures soared into the 90s on Monday with heat indices in the mid-90s in Metro Detroit. It’s set to get even hotter on Tuesday, prompting warnings.

Heat warning

A heat warning has been issued for all of Metro Detroit and much of southeast Michigan, including Genesee, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties for Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

A 4Warn weather warning has also been issued for Tuesday due to the heat and the potential for severe storms.

Monday evening

Monday evening will be partly cloudy and warm with lows in the low 70s. Winds will be from the south and south-southwest around 5 mph.

Tuesday

Be prepared for the heat and potential for storms on Tuesday. Temperatures will soar into the low 90s, but it will feel like 100 degrees or higher in many communities. It will be necessary to take precautions against the heat and to look out for the health of others.

Mostly sunny to partly cloudy Tuesday, but the sunshine could be interrupted by an isolated morning thunderstorm and a few afternoon storms. A few thunderstorms could become strong to severe starting in the afternoon, but the greatest chance is closer to sunset and into midnight. All of southeast Michigan is under a slight (or level two of five) risk. The main concerns are straight-line winds over 60 mph, small hail, localized flooding, and a low-level threat of an isolated tornado. Non-thunderstorm winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph.

After the chance of storms Tuesday night, skies will be partly cloudy with temperatures only dropping into the lower 70s.

Wednesday

The unusually warm weather and potential for storms will continue into Wednesday. Highs in the upper 90s are expected in Metro Detroit with a heat index in the mid-90s. Showers and thunderstorms are possible from midday through the evening. Storms could become severe again with the threat of damaging winds. Lows Wednesday night will be in the upper 60s to 65s.

Thursday

Thursday will offer a bit of relief. Under partly cloudy skies and a chance of showers and thunderstorms, highs will be in the low 80s. Lows will be in the low to mid 60s.

Friday

Then a cold front moves across southeast Michigan on Friday. It brings more showers and thunderstorms. Highs are around 80 degrees.

Weekend

Behind the cold front, cooler, drier air will flow into Metro Detroit for the weekend. Expect mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies with highs in the low 80s on Saturday and Sunday. That’s closer to the normal highs of 79 degrees during the late August and early September.
