Packers acquire QB Malik Willis in trade with Titans, sources say

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur indicated after Saturday’s final preseason game that his backup quarterback might not be one already on the roster. Two days later, that’s exactly what happened.

The Packers traded a 2025 seventh-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans for quarterback Malik Willis on Monday, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Willis is expected to replace Jordan Love this season.

The Packers held a summer-long competition between second-year pro Sean Clifford and rookie Michael Pratt to serve as Love’s backup — a role Clifford filled as a rookie last season. The Packers drafted Clifford in the fifth round last year and Pratt in the seventh round this year.

While both teams had their moments, neither was flashy enough to convince the Packers they could win games if something happened to Love.

When asked after the final preseason if they had any good options behind Love, LaFleur said Saturday, “We’ll see.”

“There were some really good moments and then there were some things we definitely need to do better,” LaFleur said. “And then we evaluate everything that’s out there for us.”

It’s possible the Packers will keep either Clifford or Pratt on the roster, at least until they get Willis up to speed on offense. It might be too much to ask of Willis to serve as the No. 2 quarterback for the season opener against the Eagles in 11 days.

The Packers have invested heavily in Love, a first-round pick in the 2020 draft who signed a four-year, $220 million contract at the start of this year’s training camp after one season as a starter.

Willis would have been the No. 3 quarterback behind starter Will Levis and backup Mason Rudolph. He worked primarily with the third team during training camp, but made strides in his first season under new coach Brian Callahan.

Callahan indicated during his press conference on Monday that he might not be able to keep three quarterbacks when asked about the third revision to the NFL’s quarterback rule.

“It looks like you’re getting a free spot for a third quarterback,” Callahan said. “But it’s not. It’s a roster spot and it’s a real spot and you have to carry them at 53 to get that emergency quarterback.”

Willis got caught in a numbers game that prevented Tennessee from keeping a third quarterback. The Titans would eventually keep four tight ends and running backs, making Willis redundant.
