10 offers for your dog on National Dog Day

You probably already treat your dog like the best dog he can be, but did you know there’s an unofficial holiday specifically dedicated to spoiling man’s best friend? It’s National Dog Day on Monday, August 26th, and there are plenty of freebies and deals available for you and your fur baby to celebrate their special day. Keep in mind that national chains may have different deals based on location, so it’s best to ask your local haunt what they have to offer.

Just be sure not to mix up human treats and dog treats, says Zack Keithy, a former veterinary technician who is now the editor-in-chief of the website Canine Care Central. Human food can be unhealthy and downright dangerous for your dog.

Starbucks

The best kind of free treat? One that’s always free. While it’s not listed on Starbucks’ website or menu, a quick Instagram search for the term “puppuccino” reveals the item’s popularity. Keithy says it’s simply a small cup filled with whipped cream. “This treat is safe for most dogs in moderation, as long as they don’t have dairy allergies,” he says.

Mars

People and pet snack magnate Mars Inc. is offering a special way to treat pups — and their owners — for National Dog Day. Visit MarsSummerTreatPack.com starting August 26 at 10 a.m. ET to claim a free, limited-edition Mars Summer Treat Pack. This tasty bundle includes M&M’s Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches (for pet owners) and Greenies Dental Treats for Dogs — both brands under the Mars umbrella.

Bruster’s ice cream

The dog days of summer are a great time to treat your pup to a scoop of Bruster’s ice cream. And even better, it’s a year-round offer. Participating locations are offering free doggy sundaes: 1 ounce of vanilla ice cream with a dog biscuit. Bruster’s has nearly 200 independently owned stores in 22 states. Find the location nearest you on the Bruster’s website and call to ask if they have this delicious dog treat.

Barking

From now through August 27, new subscribers can get their first monthly BarkBox of dog toys and treats for just $5. Additionally, on National Dog Day, owners can visit barkshop.com for a free treat bundle with any $30 purchase using the code DOGDAYBUNDLE. The bundle includes two bags of Clucky Jerky Sticks and Magic Jerky Bars.

And if you love your pooch and want to get him permanently tattooed on your body, consider entering Bark’s National Dog Day Tattoo Contest. Now through September 6, you can enter the contest by submitting a photo and a short explanation of why you deserve a free tattoo of your pooch. Bark will select 200 people to win a $150 Visa gift card to spend on a dog-inspired tattoo from an artist of your choice.

PetSmart

Ever wanted to turn on the TV on your way to work so your dog is occupied and active, not bored and destructive? As part of an ongoing deal running now through Sept. 30, the pet store has teamed up with DOGTV to offer PetSmart members two months of free access to Treats Rewards — a free program provided by PetSmart.

If a free trial of DOGTV isn’t what you’re looking for, a trip to your local PetSmart can be a fun way to celebrate National Dog Day. When shopping for your pooch, keep in mind that many PetSmart locations have bakeries that offer dog-friendly treats, says Keithy. “From fresh-baked cookies to personalized cakes, these options are generally safe and fun for your dog,” says Keithy. Check out your local PetSmart to see what they have to offer.
