Norris takes crushing victory over Verstappen and Leclerc

Lando Norris claimed his second Formula 1 victory with a dominant performance at the Dutch Grand Prix, beating Max Verstappen in his home race.

Despite losing the lead at the first corner, Norris recovered to pass Verstappen and immediately began to build a lead over the Red Bull to ensure he had a significant advantage over the Dutchman – crossing the finish line with a 22.9 second lead. This ensured that Norris, with the fastest lap, reduced Verstappen’s championship lead to 70 points.

“It feels great, I wouldn’t say it was a perfect race because of lap 1, but after that it was beautiful,” said Norris. “The pace was really high, the car was incredible and I was able to get comfortable, push and pass Max.

“I think quite early on, actually from lap 5-6-7, I expected Max to push and get a bit of a lead, and he never did. So from that moment on I knew we were in a good fight, but he just seemed to drop out. And my pace got better.”

Norris was under pressure to hold the lead into the first corner, having failed to do so from pole position in Barcelona and Hungary. However, the McLaren driver suffered too much wheelspin in the first corner and lost ground to Verstappen entering Turn 1.

Verstappen then ended any hope of a DRS comeback by immediately gaining a second on Norris. In the following laps his lead increased to 1.5 seconds, allowing Norris to keep him in check.

The Red Bull driver was unable to extend his lead any further, however, as Norris gamely hung just outside the DRS margin and Verstappen struggled to turn into the slower corners. After the first 15 laps, Norris jumped out of his early management to close in on Verstappen, although his DRS attempt at Turn 1 at the start of Lap 17 was evaded.

However, his attack on the following lap failed and he gathered a huge amount of momentum into the banked Turn 14, passing Verstappen on the inside.

Shortly after, Norris shook off Verstappen and began to outpace his championship rival by more than half a second per lap. Despite Verstappen pitting a lap early, when they only stopped for new tyres, Norris still maintained a large gap and disappeared in a crushing – and Verstappen-like – display of dominance.

Charles Leclerc completed the top three after shaking off a prolonged period of pressure from Oscar Piastri, having undermined the Australian and George Russell during pit stops.

The Monegasque quickly dealt with the traffic around him after his stop and managed to get Russell loose. Despite Piastri’s best efforts, Leclerc retained enough top speed through Turn 1 to keep Piastri behind him.

Piastri had driven longer in the race to build up a nine-lap lead on the hard tyre for the second stage. While he overtook Russell with relative ease, Leclerc proved a much tougher nut to crack.

Carlos Sainz recovered from his Q2 exit to finish fifth with a series of well-judged overtaking moves, passing Sergio Perez despite the Mexican’s strong defence to move up to sixth.

This would have been fifth place when he overtook Russell, but the Briton pitted towards the end of the race for a gamble on soft tyres. This didn’t quite work out, as Russell ran out of time – and in fact lacked the speed – to overtake Perez and lost his position on the track.

Lewis Hamilton also put in a solid recovery drive to take eighth place after also retiring in Q2 and receiving a grid penalty for impeding Perez. Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso completed the top 10, with the latter ousting Nico Hulkenberg from the points.
