A woman’s home is still being visited by one of the world’s most venomous snake species. The snake catcher who responds to her rescue calls can’t figure out why the brown snakes keep showing up.

For the ninth time this year, Mark Pelley — better known as the Snake Hunter — received a phone call on Thursday from Caroline Crosling, a resident of Diamond Creek in Melbourne’s northeast. He admits he might as well have put his shoes on before answering her call, knowing why she was calling. He has attended more than a dozen rescues on her property in the past two years.

“She called me and basically said, ‘Hi Mark, I’m Caroline.’ We’re on a first-name basis now,” Pelley told Yahoo News. Crosling explained that another eastern brown snake was on her property.

“She doesn’t even have to give me her address anymore,” he said as he drove to her house and saw “a brown snake watching her from the back door.”

Eastern brown snakes are the most common cause of fatal snakebites in the country. Their small amount of venom is potent and has enormous force, but bites from this species are relatively rare.

Despite his efforts to find out why there are so many eastern brown snakes in Crosling’s home, Pelley has still not come up with an answer.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time. I’ve even stood there and gone through the whole building trying to figure it out, but I can’t figure out why they like her so much,” he said, before joking: “She’s a really nice lady, so that could be it.”

Because her cats visit her so often, Crosling built a sheltered run for her cats. She also has to limit the time her dog spends outside, for fear of what would happen if her pets and any reptiles came into contact with each other.

Despite the unusual events, the snake catcher praised Crosling for her “patience” and for being the “sweetest lady” toward the snakes.

“When it comes to snakes, a lot of people panic and do stupid things, but she does the right thing,” he said. “She knows to watch it from a safe distance. She knows to make sure she doesn’t come in contact with it. She keeps all the animals away and she just calls me and waits for me to come.”
