Manchester United’s defence wasn’t the only thing to leak at the Amex Stadium today.

During Brighton’s 2-1 win over the Red Devils, water was spotted pouring from the roof of the home side’s stadium and reaching the stands.

While Erik ten Hags’ men will be sorely disappointed with the result, having conceded a goal in the 95th minute and had an own goal disallowed for a bizarre offside decision, they will be pleased to hear that their stadium is not the only one with a leaky roof in the Premier League.

Manchester United faced heavy criticism last season over the state of Old Trafford and the unacceptable nature of a leaking roof in the Premier League.

But today, Brighton in Sussex proved that even the newest stadiums can leak in heavy rain.

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher saw the water pouring from the roof and said on the footage: ‘You don’t just see it in Old Trafford, it’s everywhere.’

His co-commentator Ally McCoist remarked: ‘What kind of weather are we getting? What are you serving us down here.’

The Amex opened in 2011, replacing the temporary Withdean Athletics stadium as Brighton’s home ground.

The stadium has been active in the Premier League for many years, since the Seagulls were promoted to the top English division in 2017.

Despite the hole in the roof, it did little to dampen the spirits at Brighton, with a 95th-minute header from Joao Pedro ensuring the Seagulls continued Fabian Hürzeler’s perfect start to the season.

Fletcher and McCoist weren’t the only ones reacting to Brighton’s leaky stadium. Many fans took to social media to make jokes about the Seagulls, and the Red Devils weren’t left out of the jokes either.

An ‘X’ user wrote: ‘It’s very nice of Brighton to make the Man Utd fans feel at home here.’

A second later a United fan probably said: ‘I’m sorry, but our fountain is better..’

And a third added: ‘Someone’s going to have to move and sit on the stairs’.
