The lie detection tests on the main suspect and six others in the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital began on Saturday (August 24, 2024), officials said.

The polygraph test on the main suspect, Sanjay Roy, will be conducted at the jail where he is lodged, while the remaining six, including former director Sandip Ghosh and four doctors who were on duty on the night of the incident and a civilian volunteer, will undergo the test at the agency’s office, the officials said.

A team of polygraph specialists from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi was flown to Kolkata to conduct these tests, the investigators said.

The CBI told the Supreme Court on Thursday (August 22, 2024) that there was an attempt to cover up the rape and murder of the medical graduate by the local police as the crime scene had been tampered by the time the federal agency took over the investigation.

The rape and murder of the resident doctor in a hospital seminar room sparked widespread protests.

The doctor’s body was found with serious injuries in the seminar room of the hospital’s pulmonology department on the morning of August 9. Mr Roy was arrested the next day.

On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the investigation be transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which began its probe on August 14.
