All iPhone 16 camera specs just leaked. Here’s what’s new

Apple is expected to hold its next special event on Tuesday, September 10, which means new iPhones and Apple Watches are just a few weeks away.

Rumors surrounding the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series have been circulating for months, but specific details surrounding their camera systems have remained unknown. Until now. According to details posted by AppleInsider, each of the new phones will likely feature upgraded camera specs. However, some features are expected to remain the same and share common features with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.

The cheaper iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to come with dual cameras on the rear. According to the new report, the primary wide-angle camera will offer 1x and 2x zoom, while the secondary ultra-wide camera will have 0.5x zoom. As has long been rumored, the cameras will be stacked vertically this time around; more recent models have had their rear cameras placed diagonally.

The primary camera will once again be 48MP, like on the iPhone 15 series, with an f/1.6 aperture and 2x optical quality telephoto capabilities. However, Apple is expected to bump the aperture up from f/2.4 to f/2.2 for the ultra-wide camera. Users can expect to see improved low-light shots as a result. AppleInsider also expects the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to offer macro photography for the first time.

The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max’s cameras are also expected to change, with these phones once again getting three cameras on the back: a wide-angle camera, an ultra-wide camera, and a telephoto camera.

The primary sensor of the new iPhone will again be a 48MP camera with a F/1.78 aperture. This sensor enables 2x optical quality 12MP telephoto shooting with 1.22-micrometer pixels.

Both models get a 5x telephoto lens, an upgrade from last year when only the iPhone 15 Pro Max had this feature. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro had a 3x telephoto lens. The telephoto lens will once again be 12MP with a F/2.8 aperture.

The ultra-wide lens on the iPhone 16 Pro series will also see some changes. It will now have a resolution of 48MP (up from 12MP) and deliver 0.7μm pixels when used at full resolution and 1.4μm when used in quad-pixel form. The lens also has a faster aperture (f/2.2 instead of f/2.4) for improved low-light performance. Users will also be able to shoot 48MP ProRaw photos with the iPhone 16 Pro models.

There are two final camera changes expected to come to the new iPhones. According to AppleInsider, Apple has added support for a new image format, JPEG-XL. The two iPhone 16 Pro models with Dolby Vision will also support 3K video recording at 120 frames per second (fps). Both models can record 1080p video at either 210 fps or 240 fps, up from the 25 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps options that were available on the iPhone 15 Pro models. It’s also noted that 4K video recording will be available at 60 fps, up from the current model’s 4K video recording at 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps, or 60 fps.

Finally, according to AppleInsider, Apple has decided to introduce a Capture Button on all four iPhone 16 models. The button is located in the bottom-right corner of the capacitive model, so when the phone is held in landscape mode, the camera bump is at the top and your index finger rests on the new button. The button works with native and third-party camera apps to perform tasks like zooming, cycling through filters and more.

Another rumor surrounding the next iPhone lineup is that the iPhone 16 Pro models will feature larger displays. Rumor has it that the iPhone 16 Pro’s display will increase from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, while the larger iPhone 16 Pro Max could potentially sport a 6.9-inch display instead of the current 6.7-inch one.
