Lily Allen’s confession about returning her dog to the shelter has not been well received

Lily Allen is certainly no stranger to controversy, and the latest episode of her BBC podcast Miss Me? has put her back in the spotlight.

During the most recent episode of the BBC Sounds podcast, the Smile singer explained that she and her family were planning to adopt a new dog.

However, she admitted that they had previously opened their home to a dog, which they eventually sent “back home,” where they found her having eaten the family’s passports.

“We had actually already adopted a dog, but she had eaten my passport so I took her back to the shelter,” Lily recalls.

“She ate all three of our passports and our visas were in them. And I can’t tell you how much money it cost me to get everything replaced because it was COVID and so it was an absolute logistical nightmare.

“And because my children’s father lives in England, I couldn’t take them to their father until four or five months later, because that bloody dog had eaten their passports.”

“I just couldn’t look at her,” the Brit Award winner admitted. “I thought, ‘You’ve ruined my life.'”

The chart-topping star continued to insist that “passports weren’t the only thing she ate”, adding: “She was a very badly behaved dog and I really tried my best with her but it just didn’t work and the passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

But as you might expect, Lily’s comments left a bad taste in the mouths of many listeners.

Lily Allen adopts puppy from shelter. Creates an insta for the puppy to get likes. Doesn’t she realize that it’s her job to raise this puppy to be a dog? They’re not pre-wired, you just have to teach them that these things are bad

She wasn’t a badly behaved dog Lily, she was a puppy who clearly needed training. These are things you think about before you adopt a dog and if you can’t commit to it, don’t adopt him.

I hope you are banned from every shelter now for being a bad owner. https://t.co/6FCQn7LSQO

Not a badly behaved dog, just a normal puppy.

Shame on you, All.

Not Lily Allen who adopts a puppy and then sends it back like it’s an out-of-size PLT dress because it ate her and her children’s passports. photo.twitter.com/CyXTqj3Bzo

noisy puppy did naughty things and temporarily put everything on pause = “you ruined my life” apparently

And why would you leave important legal documentation lying around where even a puppy can easily reach it?

that sounds like your company honestly ngl https://t.co/Mk0ANiCron

Lily Allen brought a puppy back to the shelter after she created a whole Instagram account for Mary. It was a puppy and she was doing puppy things and Mary was uncomfortable with it. photo.twitter.com/etJHoKSoDu

I have completely moved on from Lily Allen. I hope that poor little dog has found a wonderful home with normal loving people who will cherish him.

Why were the passports placed where a puppy could grab them and eat them?

That sounds like a problem of people feeling spoiled, not a problem of cute puppies.

I love Lily Allen so much, but as soon as I heard her say what she said on the podcast today, I was like, eeeeee, should have cut that, honey… or at least given it some more context aaaaaah, this isn’t going to go down well ffs.

Just a… “we didn’t realise how much work it would be, we’re both busy people and it was a mistake… we made sure it went to a good home” THAT’S IT 😂

HuffPost UK has contacted Lily Allen’s team for comment.

Lily previously caused a stir with her comments on Miss Me? about the ongoing debate about nepotism in Hollywood, and with her review of Beyoncé’s latest album Cowboy Carter.

The podcast launched earlier this year, with Lily revealing in June that only one comment had to be removed so far due to BBC guidelines.
