Ronald Lee Syvrud arrested in Arizona manhunt after ‘threatening to kill Donald Trump’ as former president crossed border

A MAN who allegedly made a terrifying threat to kill Donald Trump on the same day the presidential candidate was in town to scout the border was arrested after an extensive manhunt.

Police have confirmed they have located 66-year-old convicted sex offender Ronald Lee Syvrud, who allegedly threatened the former president on social media.

The manhunt was underway early Thursday morning in Cochise County, in southeastern Arizona, the site of Trump’s campaign rally speech.

Several hours after the search began, the sheriff’s office confirmed to The US Sun that the suspect had been arrested.

“We confirm he was apprehended without incident today at 2:30 p.m.,” the sheriff’s office said.

Four hours after the suspect was arrested, the sheriff’s office posted a statement on Facebook detailing the arrest.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that the message in question “contained language indicating bodily harm to the candidate.”

“On Wednesday, August 22, 2024, a second social media post was identified that again contained threats toward candidate Trump from suspect Syvrud. As part of the operational plan for candidate Donald Trump’s visit on today’s date, locating this subject was a priority. Intelligence developed led to a possible location in the St. David area and multiple units were dispatched to the location,” the statement continued.

“At approximately 2:16 p.m., units on scene observed the suspect traveling outside of the identified location, and a felony stop was conducted. Syvrud was taken into custody without further incident at approximately 2:30 p.m.

“Syvrud was subsequently booked into the Cochise County Jail on a Graham County (AZ) felony warrant for failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of menacing in connection with this case. Syvrud remains in custody pending further court action.”

The department concluded its statement by thanking everyone who helped find the suspect, saying the arrest is “a testament to the strong working relationship and coordination between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.”

Earlier that day, the sheriff had asked the public for help in locating Syvrud.

“The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of threatening statements made via social media by suspect Ronald Syvrud toward candidate Trump,” the sheriff’s office previously told The US Sun.

“As a result, additional information was developed confirming the outstanding warrants on this subject, and a subsequent public announcement was issued.

“We are working closely with all local, state and federal partners to locate this subject in connection with the outstanding warrants and the threat investigation. We are continuing our search for this suspect.”

The southern Arizona man has an outstanding warrant for drunken driving and failure to appear for drunken driving in Wisconsin. He also has warrants for a hit-and-run and failure to register as a sex offender in Arizona.

BORDER VISIT

Trump visited the southern border in Cochise County, Arizona, on Thursday afternoon to discuss border policy.

During the speech, the former president said he was “not surprised” by the death threats when asked about them by a reporter.

“There’s a manhunt going on in this county today; someone threatened you. Did you hear about it before you came?” the reporter asked.

“I hadn’t heard that, but I’m not that surprised. The reason is I want to do things that are very bad for the bad guys,” Trump replied.

As part of the operational plan for the visit of candidate Donald Trump on today’s date, locating this subject was a priority. The developed intelligence led to a possible location in the St. David area and multiple units were sent to the location.

The theme of Thursday’s visit is “Make America Safe Again.” The former president is expected to speak with people whose family members were attacked by immigrants who entered the country illegally during the Biden administration, The Associated Press reported.

The visit comes one day before the GOP candidate plans to hold a rally in Glendale, Arizona.

The former president’s imminent death comes just over a month after he was shot in the ear during a July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

During the rally, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot the businessman as he spoke on stage about border crossings during his leadership.

When Trump turned his head slightly to look at a graph on the screen showing border crossings, Crooks fired at the former president, narrowly missing his head.

“I started to turn to the right to see the graph and I was going to turn a little bit more. Luckily I didn’t. Then I heard a loud whooshing sound and felt something hit my right ear really hard,” Trump said during his speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

BORDER DISPUTES

Trump’s visit to the Arizona border is one of several he has made since becoming president in 2016.

The former president has long advocated for stricter border security and has criticized the Biden administration for its laxity on border security.

During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump specifically targeted Kamala Harris for her positions on open borders.

“You know, she wants open borders,” Trump said at his rally on Wednesday in Asheboro, North Carolina.

“If she were to become president, within four years there would be an additional 60 to 70 million people from all over the world, and not just from South America.

“And remember, they are being released from their prisons.

“They come from prisons and mental institutions and insane asylums. Then we have hundreds and probably thousands of terrorists who have entered our country,” he added.

Donald Trump Butler Rally Shooting Latest

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was struck by a bullet while speaking at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024.

Donald Trump was not seriously injured and is expected to make a full recovery. He has already made his first public appearance since the shooting.

Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, backed the former president’s claims, saying they would send a “message to all criminal illegals.”

“President Trump and I have a message for all the criminal illegals who have flocked across Kamala’s vast southern border: Pack your bags, because in six months you’re going home,” he proclaimed.

The former president criticized the Democratic Party for not discussing the border issue at the Democratic National Party Convention.

I hadn’t heard (about the threat), but I’m not that surprised. The reason is that I want to do things that are really bad for the bad guys.

Donald Trump

“It’s like they’re having a party. They don’t mention the border. All they’re doing is making up lies about me,” Trump said during a call to Fox & Friends on Thursday morning.

Trump has previously criticized Harris for failing to carry out a mandate given to her by President Joe Biden in 2021 to work with Central American countries to address the “root causes” of migration.

The former president called the Democratic candidate the “border czar.”

“Under Border Czar Harris, illegal aliens are pouring in by the millions and millions and millions,” Trump said at a rally in July.

The White House immediately rejected Trump’s nickname for Harris, claiming the vice president’s term was not “the limit.”

“That was never a term that was assigned to her. And the purpose of her work was not necessarily the border or border policy, but looking at the root causes, which she did successfully,” Rep. Veronica Escobar said, according to NBC News.

“And I think it’s always important to highlight Republican obstructionism at every turn when it comes to immigration or border policy.”
