Gamescom 2024 is expensive, so developers are showing their games online

Gamescom may be the largest gaming expo in the world, but that doesn’t mean just anyone can attend or show off their game. Since the event is held in Cologne, Germany, the price of traveling there, booking space at the event, and promoting a game during the big announcement stream can be steep. According to the official website, a 30-second trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live costs 115,000 euros ($127,671) — and that’s just the starting point, on top of other costs. The total cost isn’t always this high, as there are editorial slots available for major announcements and “wildcard” slots available for independent teams. But overall, it’s expensive.

In response to the cost barrier, indie developers have started a new trend on social media, sharing what they’re working on. As a result, X is full of talk about great indie games that aren’t part of Gamescom but are absolutely worth checking out.

The trend works more or less the same way every time someone posts. A developer tweets something like, “Gamescom trailer is over $100K so here it is,” and then adds a GIF, image, or clip from a game. Some of the games in the trend, like the phenomenal 1000x Resistancehave been released and you can start playing now. However, many of the tweets show neat works in progress.
