Erik ten Hag says Jadon Sancho and the rest of his Manchester United players must show the right attitude if they are not in the squad this season.

Sancho was missing from the 20-man squad for Fulham’s opening match against United after returning to the club this summer following his fallout with Ten Hag.

The row arose after Sancho was left out of Arsenal’s squad last season, with the England star claiming his manager had made him a ‘scapegoat’.

Although Ten Hag and Sancho have drawn a line under the matter, there is still a possibility that the England winger will leave this summer amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

When asked whether Sancho could return to the Brighton squad on Saturday afternoon, Ten Hag did not want to comment. He did, however, stress how important it is that his players accept his decision if they do not play.

“We’ll see,” he said. “We have a squad, and I hope we have a dual-positioning squad when we go into the season after September 1. That means you can’t select all the players, but you need them all during the season. We have to manage it.

“The attitude of the players is very important. Sometimes they are disappointed and they have to deal with that. You win as a team. The prizes will be decided next May and until then we need all the players in the team and they have to be very motivated. That is not an expectation, that is a demand for the team.”

Ten Hag confirmed that Rasmus Hojlund, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Victor Lindelof will miss the trip to the south coast.

“Tyrell Malacia, Rasmus Hojlund, they’re not available. Luke Shaw, of course,” he added. “(Lindelof) has a problem with his toe, hopefully he can come back soon, but he’s not available for the weekend.”
