Memorial Softball Tournament Honoring Fallen West Virginia Soldier Scholarship Fund Returns

A softball tournament to benefit a scholarship fund in memory of a deceased West Virginia State Police officer is back and bigger than ever.

The Cory Maynard Memorial Scholarship Tournament returns for a second year on Aug. 10 with 14 teams at Ted Ellis Baseball Field in Chapmanville from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to a press release from organizers.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard was killed in the line of duty in Mingo County on June 2, 2023. A memorial scholarship has been established in his honor at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College.

According to the officers, the event is not only an opportunity to commemorate, but also to engage the community and let it enjoy itself in the spirit of a public servant.

“This event is a special opportunity for us to collectively remember Cory, share joy and contribute to a cause that is close to our hearts,” said Sgt. Jamie Harris, commander of the Logan WVSP detachment and a friend of Maynard, in the press release.

Maynard’s legacy will be further honored when his daughter, Zoe, presents the scholarships and his son, Finn, has the privilege of throwing out the first pitch, organizers said.

Admission is $5 for individuals or $15 for families. Visitors will also find police cars, food trucks that donate 20% of their profits to the scholarship fund, and custom T-shirts for sale.
