There are few things that beat the feeling of winning an Olympic medal.

Unless you experienced what American swimmer Ryan Murphy experienced on Monday at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Shortly after winning his third consecutive Olympic medal in the 100-meter backstroke, the three-time Olympian learned he was going to be a “girl dad.” His wife, Bridget Konttinen, revealed the gender of their baby to him in the stands with a special cardboard sign that read, “Ryan, it’s a girl!”

“Tonight was extra special. My wife told me we’re having a girl, so that’s incredible news (and) even better than winning a bronze medal,” Murphy told media in Paris after winning the bronze.

He added: “We’d been guessing what the gender was going to be for a few weeks, so this was a great way to find out. I think that just excited me and really took the night to a whole other level.”

Murphy beat Greek swimmer Apostolos Christou by a whopping two seconds to reach the podium in Paris and win his seventh Olympic medal.

With the bronze medal, Murphy made history as he became the second male swimmer to win three Olympic medals in the 100-meter backstroke in his career. Murphy won gold in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics, while he won bronze at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It was also, at that time, the 10th medal won by the United States in the swimming pool at the Paris Games. With 11 total medals in swimming thus far, the United States leads its rival in the swimming pool, Australia, by five medals, 11-6. In Paris, the United States currently ranks first among all countries and delegations in total medals, with 20.

Murphy will now look to add to his medal tally in Paris in the 200m backstroke, which begins tomorrow, July 31, with the heats at 5:20 a.m. ET. If Murphy can top his heat, he will advance to the semifinals later on Wednesday at 3:47 p.m. ET with a spot in Thursday’s final still up for grabs.
