Rory McIlroy threatens US harasser; angry fans mock Olympian with ‘greatest choke artist’ remarks

Rory McIlroy and hecklers have a long history. Remember the incident in 2016 when he and Justin Rose invited a fan to putt and the pair lost the bet? This time, it’s a bit different. The Northern Irishman was spotted by his fans on the Old Course at Le Golf National when a certain person in the crowd started booing. Well, it’s not like the golfer listened to everything and walked away.

A video of this was shared by NUCLR GOLF on its X handle. It showed a fan fervently shouting at the athlete on the short par-4 18th, “New York loves you. Miami, Florida. The Bronx baby, the Bronx.” His answer? “You won’t love us next year,” McIlroy threatened with a reference to the 2025 Ryder Cup.

The Ryder Cup will be held in Bethpage Black next year, where McIlroy and the European team will attempt to defend their title against the American team on foreign soil. Furthermore, the fact that the golfer’s team has won 10 of the last 14 editions suggests a possible frustration brewing in the hearts of American fans. In any case, while the prediction of the future was applauded at Le Golf National, it was not so online, as many seemed angry at his reaction.

Internet users find no amusement in Rory McIlroy’s response

The 35-year-old was at one point atop the leaderboard at the 2024 U.S. Open. But two missed putts inside four feet on the final three holes at Pinehurst No. 2 cost him his close fifth major title win. Some fans alluded to the missed shots that resulted in three bogeys on his final four holes, particularly those on the par-4 16th and the par-4 18th, to give the golfer a blow, “No way give Rory any 2-footers next year. He needs to throw them out.” And “The way Rory putts, he doesn’t worry about much.”

The close encounter with a potential major victory saw Rory McIlroy suffer yet another loss at the prestigious events. It was the 11th time since his 2014 PGA Championship victory that he had finished in the top five at a major championship, not to mention his fourth runner-up finish. It prompted a different group of followers to have similar reactions, including “I don’t want to hear any more sob stories about feeling sorry for Rory. The biggest strangler in golf,” And “That guy really needs to focus on his game. Reason 100 why he won’t win another major.”

The European team, on the other hand, has not won a Ryder Cup on American soil since the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah, when the team overtook the American squad to win the biennial event by a score of 14.5-13.5. One follower noted that such a victory would not be possible with the kind of fans that booed the golfer and his team at the upcoming event in 2025; “Rory will cry when he sees the pro-American crowd at Bethpage Black for the Ryder Cup.”

Well, the golfing community got a little taste of the upcoming Ryder Cup rivalry, despite it being the iconic Olympic Games. But will Rory McIlroy stay true to his words and help Luke Donald win the Cup again? His fans can only wait in anticipation!
